About This Sermon
In this sermon from Judges 6, Clay Thornton walks through the call of Gideon, a fearful man threshing wheat in a winepress to hide from the Midianites, whom God addresses as a 'mighty man of valor.' Clay draws out two moves of spiritual growth: being honest with ourselves rather than blaming God (contrasting Gideon's complaint and the 'dull of hearing' warning of Hebrews 5), and trusting that God sees more in us than we see in ourselves. Weaving in Moses, Jeremiah, the frightened disciples, and Paul's thorn in the flesh (2 Corinthians 12), he presses the central call: the difference between the fearful and the courageous is simply trusting God's promise, 'I will be with you.'
